Safe Table Saws Mean a Safe You

Making sure that your table saw is safe will allow you to remain safe. Not only do you need to make sure the safety features built into the table saw are in use, but you also need to follow other safety precautions when using the table saw. A safe table saw will mean a safe operation with no injury to you. Follow this guidelines and you should have a satisfying, safe experience with your table saw.

Clothing
Wearing proper clothing and gear can help protect you from injury. Make sure you always wear safety glasses to keep dust and debris from flying into your eyes. A dust mask will protect your lungs from taking in too much dust. Do not wear gloves, long sleeves, ties, long jewelry or other loose items that could get caught in the blade. Make sure to wear close-toed shoes with a non-slip sole to keep your feet safe from falling work pieces and to keep you from slipping onto the blade.

Position
Using a correct body position will keep you from becoming entangled with the blade. Stand so that you are not directly in line with the blade so that chips, dust, or the whole work piece will not fly into you. Stand solidly planted on the floor to keep from slipping and never reach behind or over the blade if it is running. You do not want to take the chance of becoming unbalanced and falling onto the blade.

Ajustments/Maintainance
Keep the height of the blade just a little higher than the work piece, but no more than 6mm. Do not leave the saw unattended unless the blade has completely stopped turning. Make sure the blade has stopped before making any adjustments and that it is clear afterwards before you turn it back on. Before changing the blade out, disconnect the power cord. This way no one can accidentally turn it on while you are changing the blade. It should also be disconnected before any other kind of maintenance to prevent an accidental shock.

Condition of Parts
Make sure the guides are in their correct position and that the tabletop is clean and smooth. This will allow you to push the work through with less effort avoiding slipping from too much pushing. Keep the rip fence parallel to the blade to keep the work piece from binding or being thrown back. Make sure the throat plate is in place and is just big enough for the blade to fit through with a little space on each side. Do not remove blade guards, spreaders, or anti-kickback devices. The blade guard should cover the blade completely and ride the thickness of the wood, closing completely after the wood is past the blade.

Working with Stock
Use a push stick if the work piece is 150cm or less in width. Use a stop block when crosscutting short pieces. Do not make cuts without a rip fence or miter gauge. Use only seasoned, dry, flat wood. Do not let go of the work piece until it is completely past the blade. Make sure before you start cutting that the wood does not have nails, screws, or knots that could kick it out or become projectiles. Do not cross cut pieces that are longer than your extension table can support.

Practicing safe working habits can make a safe table saw experience. By keeping the table saw in safe condition and working with the stock in the appropriate manner, you can avoid injury to yourself and others.
